2009 Awards

2009 Awarded Prince Charles May Day Logo

2009 Highly Commended Carbon Positive Footprints

2009 Highly Commended Carbon Positive Consumer Choices

Our success in the 2008 C+ Carbon Positive Awards (see below) led us to the challenge of competing against the very much bigger businesses in the South West.

We entered in the Carbon Positive Footprints Award and the Carbon Positive Consumer Choices Award.

Although we did not win outright we were placed second in each category and awarded Highly Commended for each. We consider this to be a very major achievement for a micro business like our own.

Prince Charles May Day Logo

Prince Charles has recognised 520 companies nationally who are working towards reducing their carbon footprint.
We are very proud to be presented with the Prince Charles May Day Logo and to have been chosen as a Case Study on the Business in the Community website.

The Limes Bed and Breakfast Eco Policy

Context
We believe that  green, sustainable living is something that should be aimed at by all. The earth and life as we know it is under tremendous threat.

We have identified the following areas for specific actions:
Energy
  • Minimise use where possible. Read meters monthly and compare with previous readings. We start with the larger consumptions of energy. Therefore we dry clothes outside wherever possible.
  • We use low energy bulbs where feasible.
  • Water is heated by solar and in summer almost 100% of the hot water is derived that way.
  • We have LPG based central heating but we supplement this by wood burning stoves in winter.
  • The new solar conservatory requires no additional heating and a comfortable temperature is maintained by solar glass technology and heat sinks.
Sustainable living
  • We feel we are stewards of the house and land and therefore should make sure they are maintained for future generations.
  • If trees have to be removed they are replaced by new ones.
  • Our soil is constantly improved.
  • We grow our own food where possible. Bacon, sausages, eggs, tomatoes, jams, honey etc are all  from The Limes whenever possible.
Wastage and packaging
  • The hospitality industry consumes vast ampounts of packaging. We minimise this. For example milk for the hospitality trays is stored in thermos flasks to keep it fresh and to save on throwaway cartons.
  • Jams are home made and honey is home produced and are stored in re-useable glass jars.

Support for local businesses
Communities have been the backbone of sustainable life in past generations and will be the only viable solution for the future. We support local producers with our business. That is not to say we never use the supermarkets and it is a curious fact of life that our locally produced mushrooms are only available from the nearby supermarket. Kenn has just started a Village Market and are looking forward to sourcing foodstuffs from there in future.
Travel and food miles
We are in the country and as in most country areas in the UK, public transport leaves a lot to be desired. We are two miles down the road from a mainline train station to London but getting to it is difficult other than by car. Taxis can be booked but we can usually pick guests up from the station if discussed beforehand and we also have a significant number of guests who come by cycle.

It is important to see family and friends and so we would not advocate abolition of motor transport entirely. We do minimise use of cars however. We have carried an an audit of our travelling and one of the points that emerged was that we were travelling to the shops more frequently for bread than for anything else. As a result we now bake our own bread so not only is it fresh for guests but we also know what is in it.

Bacon and sausages are from our own pigs and as the abbatoir/butchers are local the food miles are minimised.
Maintenance and care of historic buildings
The Limes was built around 1888 of local stone. We are carefull how we maintain and restore The Limes. We do not have uPVC windows in the main part of the house for example and ensure that repairs are in keeping with the style and age of the property.
Education
  • We love to show our guests how our solar water heating works and let them see the roof temperatures and the temperature of the water in the tank.
  • With garden and orchard tours and then further reading from our libraries guests can read up on what they have seen and develop their own strategy for sustainable living.

  • Resources for adults & children on green and organic topics
